Christmas in Chania is quite spectacular: The city wears its finest as countless twinkling lights sparkle bright amidst the Venetian port“s alleys; window shops are seasonally dressed and laden with gifts; while plush Christmas trees are decorated along with the traditional model sailing boats. The latter stems from a long lived custom paying tribute to the seamen of each family. After all Crete is a great nautical island, as well as very much true to its age old practices and traditions! At the same time, during Christmas in Chania, homemakers are busy baking diples, kourabiedes and melomakarona and their sweet, alluring scents are permeating the air. We also have our lovely carousel, train and play castle in the park; an ice ring on the stadium and several Christmas bazaars in the trademark municipal market. The atmosphere at this splendid landmark of our city will be particularly enchanting on Christmas and New Years Eves for various choir groups shall be singing traditional carols with truly touching lyrics.
Though steeped in spirituality, Christmas in Chania is also a time for some intense merrymaking and partying. For starters there is a wealth of exciting activities –musical concerts, theatrical plays, art exhibitions or parties- held at the KAM foundation (Centre of Mediterranean Architecture), guaranteed to keep young and old alike, entertained and happy. Then there is the famous annual Santa Run Chania: A fun, charity event which involves a great number of people dressed in the signature red and white Santa costume, traipsing through the streets of the old town, getting treats from the stores along the way and dancing to the sounds of selected Dj’s. This year the 8th Santa Run Chania shall take place on Saturday 26th, and is once more expected to culminate into a large party, attended by locals and visitors likewise.
